In this article, I’m going to share my HONEST Meta Quest 3 review for those who are wondering whether it’s still WORTH IT in 2025. We’ll talk about the 512GB version (because who doesn’t want more room for games), but the smaller sizes don’t change a whole lot if your gaming preferences are simple. The Meta Quest 3 was originally released in October 2023, but continues to be a best-seller to this day, and as of Spring 2025 it is still the best version available, with the Meta Quest 4 predicted to come out in the Fall of 2026.

The Meta Quest 3 512GB has set a new benchmark in the standalone VR headset market. With upgraded visuals, improved performance, and innovative mixed reality capabilities, it caters to gamers, tech enthusiasts, and professionals alike. I’m new to virtual reality gaming so this review is from a beginner’s standpoint but I know lots of seasoned players that are loving the Meta Quest 3 across a variety of games and uses as well!
Compared to previous versions, not only is performance enhanced, but the design is more comfortable allowing for a better overall experience (even our Bernedoodle, Kona, didn’t mind wearing the headset for a photo)! This review provides an in-depth look at the Meta Quest 3 design, display, performance, user experience, features, benefits, and areas for improvement – we’ll go over it all from a users perspective to help you make an informed decision before purchasing your Virtual Reality Headset.

Meta Quest 3 512GB Pros and Cons

Meta Quest 3 Pros
- High-Resolution Displays: Dual LCD panels deliver stunning visuals, it feels pretty darn real to be in the games.
- Improved Performance: Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor ensures smooth operation.
- Mixed Reality Capabilities: Color passthrough cameras enable innovative experiences.
- Ergonomic Design: Compact, redesigned controllers for improved handling and comfort during extended play.
- Extensive Library: Backward compatibility with Quest 2 games means there are more games available than you could ever test.
- Everything you need in one package: You can get started right away with the headset and controller – the majority of games require no additional materials and you can figure out what you like before extending your collection.
Meta Quest 3 Cons
- Battery Life: Limited to 2–3 hours per charge. While some people like this to encourage them to take breaks a lot of gamers find they need to purchase an external battery pack for longer playtime.
- Passthrough Clarity: Mixed reality visuals could be sharper, they’re pretty darn good but we’re hoping for further improvement in the Meta Quest 4.
- Controller Power: Uses AA batteries instead of rechargeable options, which can be a bit of a pain to keep extras on hand for when you run out.

If you want to add on the extended battery pack, carrying case, elite comfort head strap, or golf club extension those are additional but definitely not needed to get started.
Key Features:
Design and Comfort: 4.5/5
The Quest 3 features a slimmer and lighter design, weighing approximately 515 grams, which is a 40% reduction in thickness compared to the Quest 2. This streamlined model contributes to a more comfortable fit during extended use.
It really is pretty comfortable as is, but there is an elite comfort strap available as well for those that want to be playing for hours on end. You know it’s comfortable when even the doodle tolerates being your model….she does struggle to hold the handsets but i don’t think we can fault the design for that, most human hands actually find those super comfortable too.

The headset utilizes pancake lenses, enhancing visual clarity and reducing the overall bulk. The facial interface has been redesigned to accommodate a wider range of face shapes, improving comfort for users with larger heads.
Overall we have seen some pretty big improvements to the design and comfort since the Meta Quest 2! If you’ve never worn a VR headset before it can take a little getting used to but the Meta Quest 3 definitely stands out as one of the most comfortable, particularly with the elite strap added on. With the elite strap I would give comfort a 5/5 as far as VR headsets go, with the regular start we’ll stick to the 4.5 for now which is still pretty decent for “factory settings”.
Display and Visuals: 5/5
Equipped with dual LCD panels, the Quest 3 offers a per-eye resolution of 2064×2208 pixels, resulting in sharper and more vibrant visuals. The increased resolution, combined with a 120Hz refresh rate, delivers a smoother and more immersive experience, reducing motion blur and enhancing realism.
The headset also features colour passthrough cameras, enabling mixed reality experiences with improved clarity, though some users have noted that the passthrough quality could still be enhanced further.
Personally, I think the visuals are incredible and can’t imagine them getting much better. The Meta Quest 3 Virtual Reality worlds are incredibly real feeling, right up to feeling like you need to be careful to not step of the mountain edge on some of the crazy cool golf courses!
Performance 5/5
Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor and 8GB of RAM, the Quest 3 provides a substantial performance boost over its predecessor. This hardware upgrade ensures faster load times, higher fidelity graphics, and the capability to handle more complex applications and games.
The 512GB storage capacity offers ample space for a vast library of games and media, catering to users who require extensive storage for their VR content. I don’t have a lot to compare to in regard to similar devices performance but definitely have not found the meta quest to be lacking in that area at all. Overall performance is great, and the games feel super real!
Virtual Reality Controllers and Tracking 4.5/
The new Touch Plus controllers have been redesigned to eliminate the tracking rings, resulting in a more compact and ergonomic design. They rely on the headset’s cameras for tracking, which, while generally accurate, may experience occasional hiccups in certain scenarios. The controllers are powered by AA batteries, which some users may find less convenient compared to rechargeable options. Additionally, the Quest 3 supports hand tracking, providing an alternative input method for compatible applications.
Overall I’ve found the controllers to be quite accurate with tracking. They do drop the odd time and take a second to pick back up the tracking but it’s pretty rare. The half point deduction is due to learning which buttons do what, there aren’t a tonne and it isn’t complicated but is something to keep in mind with each new game. Like with any new system it takes a few minutes to get used to but they’re pretty easy to use, comfortable to hold and overall a good set up for the Meta Quest 3 tracking.
Meta Quest 3 Battery Life 4/5
The headset offers a battery life of approximately 2 to 3 hours, depending on usage. While this is comparable to other standalone VR headsets, users engaging in longer sessions may need to consider external battery packs or take breaks to recharge. Personally, I find this battery length to be perfect and a good reminder to take a break from gaming. Friends and family that enjoy longer play times have been happy with the extended battery pack add on options to make that possible.
Software and Compatibility 5/5
Running on Meta’s Horizon OS, the Quest 3 is backward compatible with the Quest 2’s extensive library of games and applications. This ensures access to a wide range of content from the outset. However, some users have noted that the user interface remains largely unchanged and could benefit from improvements in application management and overall user experience. I haven’t had any issues in that regard and would be perfectly happy to see the same or very similar software in the next version as well.
Mixed Reality Capabilities of the Meta Quest 3
One of the standout features of the Quest 3 is its mixed reality functionality, enabled by the colour passthrough cameras and depth sensors. This allows for seamless integration of virtual elements into the real world, opening up new possibilities for gaming, productivity, and creative applications. However, the quality of the passthrough feed has been described as somewhat blurry, indicating room for improvement in future updates or models.
Value Proposition 4.75/5- Is the Meta Quest 3 worth it?
I certainly think the Meta Quest 3 is a worthwhile purchase in 2025! The games, quality and ease of use are great. It’s lacking half a point because I would prefer it just came with the elite comfort head strap but otherwise it’s a pretty great setup straight out of the starter box.
Generally priced in the mid to high $600s CAD for the 512GB model, the Meta Quest 3 offers a complete package and hours of entertainment for both newcomers and seasoned VR enthusiasts. Its combination of high-resolution displays, improved performance, and mixed reality capabilities positions it as a versatile device suitable for gaming, education, fitness, and more. Another major benefit it that you can play virtually with friends and family that aren’t in the same room, house, or even neighbourhood!
While there are areas that could be improved when talking to major gamers, such as passthrough clarity and controller tracking, the overall experience is fantastic and justifies the investment. For the average player i don’t think there are really any major issues with the current version and find it well worth the price. I expect we will see another version with some further improvements, but that may take a while and this version is definitely worth giving a shot in the meantime!

Comparison to Other VR Headsets
When comparing the Meta Quest 3 to other headsets in the market, its higher resolution and Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor stand out. Devices like the Quest 2 and HTC Vive Flow fall short in terms of display clarity and processing power. Additionally, the Quest 3’s compact controllers and mixed reality features give it a competitive edge. If it’s in the budget the Meta Quest 3 is definitely the way to go. If times are tight then you can still get a lot out of some of the less advanced VR headsets too and something is better than nothing!
Conclusion
The Meta Quest 3 512GB stands as a significant leap forward in the world of standalone VR headsets. Its enhanced comfort, superior visuals, and increased performance make it a strong contender in the market. While there are minor drawbacks to consider, such as battery life and passthrough quality, the overall package offers substantial value. For those seeking a comprehensive and immersive VR experience, the Quest 3 is a worthy choice that brings the virtual world closer than ever before.
